Kevrette Brown (pronounced "Kev-Rit") (born February 15, 1990) is an American football fullback who is currently a free agent. He played college football at Elizabeth City State University. After going undrafted in 2016, Brown was signed by the North Coast Heat of the National Gridiron League (NGL). The NGL is Australia's first professional American football league in which was postponed until the 2017 season due to league construction.[1]

Early life[]

Brown lived on Dodd Street in East Orange, New Jersey attending Franklin Elementary School (renamed to Whitney E. Houston Academy of Creative and Performing Arts in 1997 in honor of former student Whitney Houston). In the spring of 1997, Brown's mother decided to get the family out of the rough New Jersey area and relocate to the metro Atlanta, Georgia area where his grandparents relocated to. Brown grew up on Central Drive in Stone Mountain, Georgia just east of Atlanta. He attended Stone Mountain High School where he earned his first varsity football letter as a sophomore playing fullback. Just after his sophomore season, Brown transferred to neighboring county school Meadowcreek High School in Norcross, Georgia. There Brown would go on to be a workhorse playing both linebacker and fullback for the Mustangs. There, he played alongside former NFL player and Wake Forest stand-out Cyhl Quarles, current NFL Houston Texans' stand-out A.J. Bouye of Central Florida, and former North Texas stand-out Quenton Brown. But due to his small 5'7" 170-pound frame, his school's non-winning record, and his low in-class performance, Brown was passed up by the bigger schools. Instead of doing what most do in his situation, Brown decided to opt out of junior college and accept a scholarship to D-II Concord University in Athens, West Virginia. He signed his letter of intent on February 6, 2008.[2]

College career[]

Concord University[]

Brown played his freshman season as a strong safety for the Concord Mountain Lions during the 2008–09 season under head coach Greg Quick.[3] Due to being a partial qualifier, Brown was forced to be redshirted for the season. After the conclusion of his freshman school year, Brown decided to drop out of school and walk away from both school and football.

University of West Georgia[]

During a long and rough 3-year hiatus from school and football, Brown spent long days working in warehouses around Atlanta. Brown realized the hardships of the real world and decided to give school and football another shot. He enrolled into nearby West Georgia, where he was initially shown interest from during his senior year of high school back in 2007, hoping to join UWG roster. Brown attended UWG's summer football try-outs but was cut by the Wolves. He was instead offered by UWG head coach, Daryl Dickey, to help the team's video coordinating staff during the 2012 season and in return he would suit up for the Wolves in 2013 re-assigned as a linebacker. Brown avidly accepted this offer, but his lack of success in the classroom held him back from joining the Wolves in 2013 as he became ineligible to play. While sitting out of the 2013 season, Brown got his grades together and became eligible to play during the 2014 season. Due to coaching changes, after Dickey stepped down from coaching,[4] Brown was no longer offered to come back and play the 2014 season for the Wolves and their new head coach Will Hall.[5] This forced Brown to transfer schools continue pursuing his football opportunity.

Elizabeth City State University[]

Brown transferred to Elizabeth City State in Elizabeth City, NC and walked-on to the Vikings football team as a linebacker in 2014. Brown played linebacker for ECSU under head coach Waverly Tillar, but initially only seen time on special teams where he became recognized for his work on kickoff and blocking on kickoff return. Midway through the season, Brown became unhappy about not seeing the field and addressed Tillar. Tillar proposed to Brown time at fullback as the team would benefit from his style of play at that position. Brown got to see the field much more as a fullback, but wasn't a starter, and continued to stand-out on special teams. In spring 2015, Brown reverted back to linebacker. He played throughout the spring at linebacker to only be moved back to fullback at the start of the 2015 season.[6] Still not a starter, Brown seen more time at the fullback position and was used in critical game moments as an impact blocker. He continued to stand-out on special teams for the Vikings and throughout his time with ECSU, Brown played in a total of 17 games. This was a major dream come true for Brown after finding it difficult to get back on the field after initially leaving college. Not only did he overcome the football obstacles but he also managed to graduate college with a 3.26 GPA and cum laude honors, also overcoming the classroom obstacles from early on in his college career.

North Coast Heat[]

On April 23, 2016, Brown signed with the North Coast Heat of the, newly experimenting Australian professional American football league, NGL after going undrafted and not receiving any offers from the NFL, CFL, or AFL after his pro-day. On May 28, 2016, Brown was informed that the NGL was unofficially postponing the season until next year due to league constructing. Brown opted out of going back to the US and stayed in Australia to play for a popular local league for the season.

Sunshine Coast Spartans[]

On June 4, 2016 Brown signed to the Sunshine Coast Spartans of the Gridiron Queensland league in Brisbane, Australia.[8] There, Brown became a stand-out linebacker and continued his special teams dominance while occasionally being used in the backfield as a key blocker at fullback. At the end of the first quarter of Brown's debut with the Spartans in Round 1, he tore his pectoral muscle on a tackling attempt. He attempted to come back after halftime and play through the pain but it was too severe. Doctors sat for 8 weeks totaling 5 games missed, and help the team to win two of their final four games. Despite missing majority of the season, Brown still managed to lead the teams in tackles, tackles per game with 12.6 per game, and pass breakups. Many suggested he earned the Defensive Player of the Year but was not eligible due to the amount of games missed. Brown quickly became known as one of the, if not the, hardest hitters and most fierce defenders in the league.

Canadian Football League[]

In February 2017, Brown was invited to work out with three CFL teams as a fullback. These teams include the Toronto Argonauts, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, and the Saskatchewan Roughriders.
