James Arthur "Jimmy" Haslam III (born March 9, 1954) is CEO of the Pilot Flying J corporate truck stop/gasoline station chain who, in August 2012, became, with wife Dee the co-majority owner of the Cleveland Browns upon final close and the NFL's official approval of the team's sale on October 25, 2012.[2][3] His father, fellow businessman James Haslam, Jr. founded the Pilot Flying J company in 1958 as the Pilot Oil Corporation.
Haslam, who lives in his native Knoxville, Tennessee, is brother to Bill Haslam, a politician who presently serves as the governor of Tennessee. [4] While attending the University of Tennessee, Haslam was roommate with Bob Corke who became U.S. senator from Tennessee. He was also a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity.
Haslam bought a minority interest in the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2008. In 2012, he reached an agreement with Browns Randy Lerner to purchase the franchise for $1 billion (USD). In the said deal, current owner Randy Lerner agreed to sell 70 percent of the Browns to Haslam upon the initial agreement in July 2012, with the other 30 percent reverting to him four years after the said closing date, although, at the time of the deal agreement, various sources with knowledge of the sale reportedly told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because details have not officially been announced.
The Browns were valued at $977 million last year by Forbes magazine, 20th in the NFL. NFL rules prohibit ownership in multiple teams in the league, so Haslam will have to sell his interest in the Steelers. Haslam's family family also owns the baseball Tennessee Smokies, a Class AA affiliate of the Chicago Cubs. [5]
Haslam is married to Susan "Dee" Bagwell Haslam, CEO of RIVR Media. They have three adult children, Jim, Whitney and Cynthia and four grandchildren.
