Despite being located in Canada, Simon Fraser played American football instead of Canadian football. Since their inception in 1965, the team had played in the NAIA against other US teams. In 1997, the team had sought to join the NCAA as a Division II school, but was turned down, As a result, the school transferred all of its teams to Canadian Interuniversity Sports (CIS), and the team switched to Canadian football, where they played in the Canada West Association. In 2009, the NCAA finally approved Simon Fraser's admission to Division II for 2011-12. In response, Canada West announced that all of Simon Fraser's teams would be suspended for the 2010-2011 season. As a result, the NCAA allowed Simon Fraser to join a year early as an emergency measure.
SFU played their home games at Terry Fox Field in Burnaby, British Columbia and were last coached by Mike Rigell.
Simon Fraser had used the names "Clan" and "Clansmen", but in 2020 those names were dropped, due to negative connotations. The new nickname of "Red Leafs" was announced on September 6, 2022.
Simon Fraser was notified in February 2023 that the Lone Star Conference would not be renewing the affiliate membership agreement after the 2023 season. On April 4, 2023, Simon Fraser announced it was dropping its football program.
