The Appalachian State Mountaineers football team represents Appalachian State University located in Boone, North Carolina. The Mountaineers are a member of the NCAA FBS Sun Belt Conference, which they joined in 2014. Prior to the Sun Belt, Appalachian State was a member of the FCS Southern Conference.
The Mountaineers play their home games at Kidd Brewer Stadium in Boone, and are currently coached by Dowell Loggains.
On September 1, 2007, Appalachian State pulled off one of the biggest upsets in college football history by defeating the 5th-ranked Michigan Wolverines 34-32 at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor, Michigan. It was the first FCS (or 1-AA) win over a ranked FBS (or 1-A) team since Division I was split into two subdivisions in 1978.
