This was Boise State's first season as a member of the Big West Conference. Previously the Broncos were a member of the 1-AA Big Sky Conference.
Boise State head coach Pokey Allen was diagnosed with a with a rare and aggressive muscle cancer after the 1994 season, and underwent surgery in August 1996. Allen returned to coach the Broncos' final two games of the season, but his condition worsened and he passed away on December 30.
