Summary[]

BYU played one of the best games of the season, but over a half dozen starters were injured in the process.

Jim McMahon, who threw for 198 yards in the first quarter, suffered a severely hyperextended knee early in second half.

Bart Oates (ankle) and Mark Brady (back) were two of the more serious casualties while Waymon Hamilton, Glen Kozlowski, Vince Stroth and Wayne Faalafua were also injured.

BYU led 17-0 at halftime as Steve Young replaced McMahon, and broke off a couple of long runs on scoring drives.
