Summary[]

Joe Montana, who had missed the previous season due to injury, replaced the ineffective Rusty Lisch and his injured backup Gary Forystek, with Notre Dame trailing 24-14 in the third quarter.

Montana (9/14, 154 yards) rallied the Irish to 17 points and the victory, throwing a 13-yard touchdown pass to Ken MacAfee (9 receptions, 114 yards) with 1:39 left.

Purdue had built a lead behind Mark Herrmann, who threw a school-record 51 passes, completing 24 for 351 yards and three touchdowns but was also picked off four times.

Herrmann had topped 300 yards passing in the first three games of his career.
