Notes
This was Marshall's first season following the November 14, 1970 plane crash that killed 37 Thundering Herd football players and eight members of the coaching staff, including head coach Rick Tolley. The NCAA grated Marshall a waiver to allow freshmen players on the varsity team so the Thundering Herd could have a more complete roster. The following season the NCAA allowed all schools to have freshmen players on their varsity teams.
