Fans were expecting a shootout because of the quarterbacks, Florida's John Reaves and Florida State's Gary Huff, but Doug Dickey opted for a ball-control game plan as Florida ran 54 times to just 11 pass plays.
The Gators built a 17-7 lead as Mike Rich opened the scoring with a touchdown run and on the ensuing kickoff, Jimmy Barr nabbed a mid-air fumble and returned it 26 yards for a touchdown.
Gary Huff led a late Florida State rally with a six-yard touchdown pass to Rhett Dawson but the following drive stalled short of field goal range.
