The Indians won the Pacific-8 Championship, and played in the Rose Bowl for the first time since 1952. In the game, they upset the previously unbeaten, untied and #2 ranked Ohio State Buckeyes, 27-17, for their first victory in the Rose Bowl since 1941. Quarterback Jim Plunkett became Stanford's first Heisman Trophy recipient.
