Summary[]
Stanford jumped out to a 17-0 lead in the first 6:30 of the game, scoring on their first three possessions as Jim Plunkett passed for 200 yards in the first quarter. With less than two minutes gone, Plunkett hit FB Howie Williams at the 25 and he dashed for the score.
The Bears' fumbles set up the next two scores, a pass from Plunkett to Jack Lasater, and the first of three field goals by Steve Horowitz.
Cal QB Dave Penhall led his team to two touchdowns in the final period, including a scoring pass to Jim Fraser with 9:23 left.
Plunkett moved Stanford 80 yards and Williams went over with four minutes left. Plunkett tried to pass for two but it went out of the end zone.
The Tribe forced a punt on the next series but Cal got the ball back for one more chance when Stanford had to punt from its own end zone. Penhall threw four incompletions and Stanford ran out the clock.
