Arizona State trailed 24-19 with 1:40 left in the third quarter when Lenny Randle returned a punt 57 yards for the score to go ahead. The lead had changed six times before Randle's score.

The Sun Devils capitalized off two Arizona fumbles in the final period to put the game out of reach. The first came four minutes after Randle's punt return on Arizona's own 17, setting up a short touchdown run by Art Malone.

The Wildcats fumbled a punt return which led to a 38-yard field goal by Ed Gallarado. Gallarado added a 31-yard field goal to conclude the scoring.
