Auburn scored in the first quarter on a three-yard pass to Jimmy Pettus from QB Richard Wood. Wood's passing had guided the 53-yard drive.

Auburn's second touchdown came on the last play of the third quarter. Jimmy Reynolds went over from the one to cap a 39-yard drive. Ed Dyas and Jerry Wilson kicked the extra points.

Marlin Dyess returned the kickoff to ALA 49 and Red Stickney and Dyess moved the ball to the AUB 25. Auburn's first team entered the game (#1 defense in the nation). Jackson passed to Dyess for 16 yards. Dyess then circled around end for the score. Jackson flipped a pass to Gary O'Steen for the two points.

Don Cochran recovered a Tony Lorino fumble at the ALA 27 with 3:24 left. Jackson completed two passes to Dyess to AUB 49. Mack Wise replaced an injured Dyess. Jackson passed to Wise for seven. A Jackson to Jerry Spruiell pass was barely deflected by Lamar Rawson. Auburn held on downs at the 38 with 10 seconds left.
